Biography

Fabius Quintilian, Latin Marcus Fabius Quintilianus (Calagurris, current Calahorra, c. 35 - Rome, c. 95), was a rhetorician and educator Hispano.

Born in Calagurris Nassica, current Calahorra, near Logroño, in the province of Tarragona hispanorromana. He made his first studies in Rome, where he acquired a very comprehensive general culture lessons remio following Palaemon and Servilius Nonanio in literature, and in eloquence Domitius Afer. Return to Hispania in 61 AD when Nero appointed governor Galba Tarraconense. For seven years, is teacher of eloquence and lawyer.

Back to Rome in the year 68 after the assassination of Nero, when Emperor Galba was proclaimed, and develops a brilliant and distinguished career of twenty years as a lawyer and teacher of rhetoric in Rome of Vespasian, Titus and Domitian. He opened a public school of rhetoric that was a great success and earned him a hundred thousand sesterces a year. He was entrusted with the education of Domitian's nephews and the children of the empress Domitilla.
His fame however comes from being the best teacher of rhetoric in the ancient world with Isocrates. In this matter reached such prestige that he was appointed professor of the subject officer with public retribution. 

He was a friend of the scientist Pliny the Elder, the Roman writer Pliny the Younger was a student of his and perhaps was even the historian Tacitus. After consuming these twenty years as a lawyer and teacher, retired 89 years to become a writer surrounded by honors. The end of life is marked with various family dramas.

First wrote a dialogue that has been lost in that exposes its own position on the growing corruption of the art of eloquence (From causis corruptae eloquentiae) and, shortly before his death, released his major work: From institutione oratory. Are spurious two collections of declamations ascribed to him (Maiores and Minores). 

Probably died shortly before the murder of the emperor Domitian in AD 95.
