Adonis legend


Legend has it that Adonis was the son of Cinyras, king of Cyprus, and his daughter Mirra. Venus, the Roman goddess of beauty and love, fell in love with the beautiful youth and left heaven to follow him everywhere. Mars, god of war, Venus the abandoned lover, driven by jealousy, swore revenge on Adonis. To satisfy their desire for revenge, inspired young passion for fighting and dangers. Adonis shipped with pleasure to hunt wild animals and his eyes reflected the audacity war. Venus feared for her life and begged to be careful.

One day, taking advantage of the absence of the goddess, Mars went to meet the young hunter in the form of an angry boar. Eyes burning with rage and aggressive fangs of the beast awakened in Adonis an uncontrollable violence. He forgot the advice of Venus and launched an arrow at the beast. The Adonis wounded boar pursued to reach and plunged the fangs, wounding him in death. Zephyr took the last breath of the beautiful youth to Venus, who, upon receipt, down from Olympus to come to their aid, if it was possible.

When he found him, tore her veil and dressed the terrible wound over it was too late. Pressed in vain unhappy in her arms the lifeless body of her lover, wanting to revive him with its warmth. Venus Jupiter begged Adonis was brought back to life, but the law of fate refused.

The goddess wept bitter tears of grief and these, brushing the blood of the beloved dead, became the flower called adonis, a delicate plant, bright and fleeting as the pleasures of life.
